hey robert downey junior
not cool
also you’re dead jsyk
and not in an “i’m going to murder you for perpetuating and participating in something that has demonised, stigmatised, and otherised my people for the last century or two” sort of way
but in an “you’re wearing that shirt right over left which is something we only we only do for dead bodies when we prepare them for burial” sort of way
it was for a movie he was playing a character that lived in an age of stereotypes i’m sure he doesn’t dress like that in public for fun calm down
It seems like every time we attempt to critique the decision to put RDJ in yellowface in Sherlock Holmes 2, a bunch of people pop out of the woodwork to explain that it isn’t problematic because of the “time period” the film is set in—That understanding that the film is set in a period where yellowface was considered less problematic (by whom? By white British people?) makes it less problematic in a film produced in the 2010s by an Asian American producer. With this also comes the argument that a very intelligent character just HAD to use this costume to further the plot. And that this costume choice is “realistic” and “authentic”—even though Sherlock Holmes did not dress like this in the Doyle stories and this version of Holmes is set in a Steampunkish Guy Ritchie fantasy Victoriana.
And then with the “calm down” or “stop looking for things to be offended by” statements…it’s really perplexing that people cannot tolerate others’ emotional reaction to a scene in a modern film with deeply rooted discriminatory contexts. The people who are affected by yellowface are the ones told they are overreacting; instead of the people who are clamoring for them to shut up or calm down.

I really hate the phrases “Well you have a right to complain” or “You’re entitled to you opinion” when I talk about racism
Nah, nigga.
I have a right to complain when I go to Wendy’s and they get my order wrong.
I’m entitled to my opinion when people ask me whether or not I think Beyonce uses lace fronts or Malaysian weave.
I am not complaining or simply stating my opinion when talking the racism.
I am talking about my rights as a human to not be persecuted and exploited.
